SUMMARY:Life Signs: Photographic Exploration by Eileen Novack
DESCRIPTION:Life Signs: a Photographic Exploration by Eileen NovackNovember 16\, – December 9\,2023Reception: Saturday\, November 18\, 5-7pm \nLife Signs \nExploring the Visual Signs of Life \nDistinguishing if a photograph is depicting something organic and alive would seem to be straightforward. Determining is relatively easy if we see a person or a well-known animal. However\, if there is no such presence\, what can be used as a visual clue? \nSome visual clues can be one or a combination of line\, color\, texture\, or shape. \nOther clues might be more difficult to see if the image is not in color or in shadow. Repeating patterns are often associated with human created objects\, but they are also very plentiful in nature as well. An image may show something that was alive in the past in some way\, though it is not currently in that state.  \nImages in this series vary from the obviously not alive or even organic to more ambiguous and uncertain. \nEileen Novack \nHas been an active photographer for the last thirteen years and a member of fotofoto gallery since 2019. Concentrating on studio photography exclusively. Her subjects of interest have been the common objects that surround us every day to light itself. She also has a keen interest in classical dramatic black and white portraits in the old Hollywood style.

SUMMARY:Portraits: Alan M. Richards
DESCRIPTION:Portraits: Alan M. RichardsNovember 16\, – December 9\,2023Reception: Saturday\, November 18\, 5-7pm \nPortraits: Alan M. Richards \nArtist Statement \nMy work may be classified as photomontage. It uses multiple photographic images\, segments of images\, drawings\, vectors\, or clips that are fused to create a single composite image. The images may be playful\, satirical\, or of a more serious nature.   I try to tell a story with each image. My artwork represents the human condition. It reflects how I view events and the interaction between people and the world. \nMy work is primarily based on photographic images. I either take the images myself or I use found/vintage or other images combined with my images. The images are  supplemented by drawing to bring the various elements into a single image. I enjoy the work of Edward Hopper\, Rene Magritte\, and David Hockney\, and see my work falling somewhere between all three artists. \nI look for the unusual in a person or persons. It’s not whether a person is fat or skinny\, one color or another\, or any other physical attribute. It’s a special aspect of an individual which makes them appear to me to be special. It’s their human quality that attracts me. \nI do not have a set pattern about how an image grows. I guess it is organic in that elements of the final image change over the time I’m working on the picture. Sometimes\, an entire background will change\, or elements will be added or deleted. The end goal is to create an image with visual interest. I may start out with some notion of the potential look of the final piece\, but that often changes as the piece progresses.

DESCRIPTION:Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler: Photography by Cintron ExhibitionDecember 14\, – January 6th\,2024Reception: Saturday\, December 16\, 5-7pm \nLaissez Les Bons Temps Rouler!!! \nArtist Statement \nIt’s been almost 40 years since my last visit to the Big Easy. The last time I was in Nola I was a young man.  I was there for Mardi Gras.  This time around I wanted to capture some images of the city famous for its culture\, food\, music and its people. \nAs I walked about the streets of New Orleans\, the vibrancy of the city was electric. The city is old … you can see it in its architecture.  The people talk of houses being haunted\, voodoo and pirates roaming the city. \nThe French Quarters… no other two words can bring give you a picture of a city.  Great food\, jazz music\, a great time and Mardi Gas.  No other city in the U.S. has the same kind of history\, culture and it’s next level food.  New Orleans has a certain kind of magic about it. \nIt’s been almost 40 years since my last visit to the Big Easy. SUMMARY:Wanderings photography by Tom D'Emic
DESCRIPTION:Wanderings: Photography by Tom D’EmicDecember 14\, – January 6th\,2024Reception: Saturday\, December 16\, 5-7pm \n \nArtist Statement The photographs I am presenting are not bold nor are they dramatic. The subjects that call to me might be a tree trunk\, a simple weed or maybe a creek at low tide. They are of the ordinary and the quiet things that one can encounter while one is in a natural area. While wandering with my tripod and camera\, I try to assume a passive role and let the subjects call out to me. It then becomes my task to put the subject in context with its surroundings and find a way to convey my feelings about what I am photographing. \nThe paper that I have printed this work on plays a major role in my ability to meet my goal of conveying the soft and subtle beauty of what was photographed. I used Washi Kozo paper which is made from Mulberry bark. When one looks closely at this paper one will see pieces of Mulberry bark swirling around in the paper \nArtist Bio \n \nI was born and raised in Brooklyn\, NY. Growing up\, I spent my summers in Greenport\, NY. It was there that I started connecting to the natural world. Later in life\, this connection explains the direction my photography has taken. When I finished my education\, I taught science to children in grades pre-k to grade five in Bushwick\, NY for the next thirty-eight years. Upon retiring\, I finally decided to do something I always wanted to do. I started making photographs. \nFor the past twelve years I have been honing my photographic skills. I consider myself primarily a landscape photographer. However\, I also enjoy photographing other subjects that are unrelated to the landscape. I want my photography to be a work in progress. I find it exciting that my work is still evolving \n

SUMMARY:Heroes and Villains: photography by Victoria Shields
DESCRIPTION:Heroes and Villains: Photography by Victoria ShieldsDecember 14\, – January 6th\,2024Reception: Saturday\, December 16\, 5-7pm \nArtist Statement \nHello and welcome to HEROES AND VILLAINS\, my photography show here at fotofoto gallery. Every year I get to go to an amazing event called Comic Con where adults become kids again and all of us meet our Heroes. Let me take you inside a world where anything can become reality. \nArtist Bio \nVictoria Elizabeth is a transgender artist from Long Island NY and is a NY EMMY Award-Winning Photojournalist. She is influenced by photographers from the beginning of the 20th century … some we have lost their names to time … who used their cameras to capture what life was on the streets and in the towns and cities during that era. \nVictoria Elizabeth is working as a news photographer here in New York. She has seen the worst and the best of the people here every day and is reminded of how amazing this thing called life is … seeing the sights and sounds and\, more importantly\, meeting the people. There’s a lot of positivity out here. Many of us go about our lives and never take that moment to step back and open our eyes to what’s right in front of us.

SUMMARY:19th National Photography Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Meredith A. Brown is a feminist art historian and curator of modern and contemporary art. She earned a Ph.D. and master’s degree from The Courtauld Institute of Art\, University of London\, and has worked in a variety of art institutions both large and small\, including The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, and the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University. She currently serves as the Consulting Curator of Contemporary Art at The Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington\, NY \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJuror’s Statement                                                                   by Meredith A. Brown \nFor over twenty years\, fotofoto gallery has been advancing photography\, experimental and traditional\, and encouraging the artistic development of photographers on Long Island and beyond. This year’s National Photography Exhibition—the 19th iteration of this juried show—exemplifies that mission. Winnowed down from over five hundred submissions by artists located across the country\, the selection of photographs exhibited here represents the best of what contemporary photography has to offer.  \nFrom striking black-and-white images and lush natural scenes to abstracted still lives\, conceptual compositions and photographic experimentations with three-dimensionality\, this year’s included works presents a wide range of photographic techniques and styles. The three winning photographs and two honorable mentions exemplify the diversity of practices possible within the same medium. Emily Marie Wilson’s Gas Mask and Television in a Chernobyl Schoolroom (2018) compellingly captures the aftermath of nuclear disaster with uncanny beauty. The digital photograph Abstract Red White by Michelle Nickerson uses saturated color and detailed texture to create a striking minimal composition. The quality of Michael Korol’s handmade paper and botanical toning adds an organic beauty to his Sacred Tree Cyanotype. The two photographers who received honorable mentions\, Kelly Graham and Kenneth Farrell\, each deployed the expansive possibilities of black-and-white photography to create very different but equally compelling portraits of individuals. Taken together\, all thirty-three of the works in this exhibition celebrate the boundless potential of photography.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n19th National Photography ExhibitionMarch 7 – March 30\, 2024Reception: Saturday\, March 9\, 5-7pm

SUMMARY:10th International Phone-ography Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Juror’s Statement: Andreas Rentsch\nI was amazed by the high visual and technical quality of the submitted work. Many photographers submitted cohesive series\, and I wish I could have chosen more than one image per participant. It was difficult selecting just 30 images from the 518 submitted. Participants have high expectations of being included in the exhibition\, and accepting a rejection of their work is never easy. As a juror\, the challenge lies in striving to be objective (an impossible task) and not letting personal preferences guide my judgment. \nSo\, what am I looking for when I judge a photo competition? The big challenge for all of us photographers is how our work stands out from the zillions of pictures produced each day. First and foremost\, I am interested in how someone’s mind (imagination) rearranges\, perceives\, and interprets the world in front of them. While a painter starts with a blank canvas\, photographers need to make sense of any given environment they encounter. I am intrigued by what they choose to include\, but equally important\, what they choose to exclude from an image. I am drawn to the experience and ambiguity of seeing the world through their own\, unique prism\, expressing moods and thoughts. It’s not about beauty\, but about asking questions and challenging us to think outside the box. It is about curiosity and the desire to discover new ways to express ideas visually. \nI understand photography as a means of communication that articulates our ideas\, memories\, and desires. It is a language. Just as we express ourselves orally in unique ways\, we do the same visually. When reviewing work\, I want to be challenged\, piqued with curiosity\, and intrigued by a photographer’s ability to make the ordinary look extraordinary\, capturing something in a new light. I appreciate images where meaning is found beyond the surface of the photographic print—where it hides as much as it reveals—forcing me to engage with the art on a deeper intellectual level. \nI have no preconceived notion of what a good photograph should look like. All I know is that the primary premise of photography involves working with light\, time\, composition\, and forms. Choosing the right technical approach that fits the imagery compounds the complexity of the medium. There are infinite ways to approach a subject matter. How a photographer successfully manages all these variables determines whether an image will make the cut. \n10th International Phone-ography ExhibitionJuror: Andreas Rentsch\, Photographer\, Artist\, EducatorExhibition Dates: August 22\, 2024 – September 14\, 2024Reception: Saturday\, August 24\, 2024\,  5-7pm
