Intermixed and interdependent\, we affect others’ lives as much as we are affected by them. SUMMARY:"Triangulation" by Andrea Fortunoff
DESCRIPTION:ARTIST STATEMENT: \nAs a photographer I often use triangles to provide order and emphasis in my images. \nTriangles are the simplest polygon and have been used to compose elements in art and architecture throughout human history. From the Pyramids to the Mona Lisa – arranging the subjects in creative endeavors by using triangles is called triangular composition. Triangular elements can be used in a variety of ways to create balance\, or its opposite in any design. The artist can create dynamic tension and build a hierarchy of interest and interconnection in a scene by drawing the viewers eye along diagonals and their intersecting apex points. Diagonal momentum can be used to lure the viewers eye to parts of an image that otherwise might be overlooked. The artist can further depth perception or block it by utilizing leading lines; which can extend out the canvas or frame. The triangular form provides artists with a tool for coherence that synthesizes qualities that are both harmonic and stable yet compelling and energetic at the same time. \nFor more information about the artist click here

DESCRIPTION:Artist Statement: \nSerendipity – Luck that takes the form of finding valuable or pleasant things that are not looked for. \nMy photography is an adventure. I plan\, I choose the area\, the scene\, the time of day\, the camera\, the lens\, the settings\, and take lots of photographs. Then come back to my computer and process the ones I think are going to capture what I want to say.\nDigital lets us take hundreds of photos\, even thousand. But out of all of them\, how many really work? How many are the ONE? Now and then the pictures that really say something to me\, that I love\, show up. That might take a bit of luck. Everything comes together.\nThe pictures I’m showing here all share something. They existed for that moment\, and no longer do. The gate is gone in a storm\, the barn with the pink sky has been taken down\, the flowers have withered\, and the cows? Not lunching in just that way today.\nSee what I saw in a moment\, that skill\, imagination\, serendipity helped  me create\, and hopefully my photographs say something to you.  \n“ART IS NOT WHAT YOU SEE\, BUT WHAT YOU MAKE OTHERS SEE. “         Edgar Degas \nBio:\n \nI grew up with a camera in my hand\, in a house filled with photography and art. I wanted to be an artist\, but didn’t consider photography a serious expression of my art.  Art school educated\, pre computer. I was doing computer graphics at work\, bought a digital camera and everything changed. Photography is now my art\, my personal expression\, my passion (obsession). \nMy work has been selected for awards from Utrecht Art in the Manhasset Art Association\, at The Art Guild of Port Washington for juried shows\, and exhibits at Gallery North\, The Barnes Gallery\, Graphic Eye Gallery\, fotofoto Gallery\, Freeport Council of the Arts\, Smithown Township Arts Council Juried Show\, the Quogue Library\, The Pace Gallery\, the Town of Oyster Bay Rotational Art program\, and more. I served as the Treasurer of the Photographic Federation of Long Island for four years\, was on the board of The Art Guild of Port Washington\, VP of the Photography Club of LI\, Huntington Camera Club\, active in the Long Island Center of Photography and other groups. Now a member of fotofoto gallery. \nLife has taken me many places – I owned a wallpaper design business\, designing a line of wallpapers that sold nationally\, and later working for telecom companies arranging trade shows. I raised two wonderful sons\, have terrific daughters-in-laws and grandchildren\, and enjoy life with and without my camera.

My images portray how\, overnight\, the busy streets of New York fell silent. SUMMARY:Saulmon Addison: Still Life Stories By Cintron
DESCRIPTION:Artist Statement:\nStill life photography is an old traditional genre of fine art photography. Most of the time\, when people think of still life\, it is fruit and floral subjects that come to mind. I wanted to use other types of inanimate subjects to tell a story\, push the envelope a little bit. \nMy goal was to make each object I photograph tell a story\, something original and artistic. To create images that tell a story without using words\, textures and background photos are used to help convey the narrative in each image. The images in “STILL LIFE STORIES” each have their own voice.  \nBio:\nBorn in Brooklyn\, now living on Long Island\, Saul first got into photography when he entered the military\, wanting to document his travels around the world. He loved taking photographs of the different places that he had read about in school and sending them back home. Saul has been a photographer for over 20 years shooting fine art\, portrait\, street scenes\, travel\, and landscape photographs. \nSaul is a member of both fotofoto Gallery in Huntington\, NY and Long Island Photo Gallery in Islip\, NY and has participated in many photography exhibitions over the years including Long Island Photo Gallery\, Salmagundi Art in NYC\, Lens Culture in NYC\, fotofoto gallery\, Henry Street Settlement NYC\, Islip Arts Council\, The Town of Oyster Bay Rotational Artist Program and Brentwood Public Library.

SUMMARY:Michael Drakopoulos: Me – Three
DESCRIPTION:Artist Statement:\nAt some point during their career photographers may realise that vintage photos have more atmosphere than their own photographs\, no matter how much work they put into them. This is even more true so for portraits. The reason is a unique characteristic of the photographic artform. It is not the vintage look\, the worn paper or the appearance of the sitter which is creating this aura. A different sort of magic is taking place here.  \nThe photo was created when for a short moment in time – fractions of a second – the photographer and the sitter connected through the workings of the camera and the medium inside which records the image. Today\, looking at that image we are peeking back in time to that one brief moment and we can feel the presence of both the sitter and the photographer. No other artform can give us this mysterious sentiment. Portraiture painting can present us with wonderful images of people\, but there is not the same defined moment of connection between painter and model in them. This magical link was created through the mechanistic and crude photographic process\, compared to painting.  \nThe machine-like camera removes the mind of the photographer during the exposure and replaces it with its own technical idea of the picture. This enables the magic to happen and to become visible every time we look at the photo with our eyes open. \nOf course\, for a photographer this poses a difficult dilemma: Presenting his or her images as their creator that subtle balance of connection gets disturbed\, and the magic won’t happen. As long as the photographer is present\, time will not have her chance to throw the delicate gaze of a gilded moment over that photograph – no matter how beautiful it may be.   \nIn my show ‘Me – Three’ I try to get a grip on this dilemma – an impossible task\, for sure. I have only creatively started with this theme recently\, after I found a box with mesmerizing brownie photos of a young lady in a vintage shop somewhere on Long Island. I don’t know where I am going with this\, but I hope to carry on and reach towards this gilded gaze – the photographer’s version of the golden fleece – if you wish.

SUMMARY:John Lazzaro: Sanatorium: Remnants of America's Tuberculosis Movement
DESCRIPTION:Artist Statement:\nBefore COVID-19\, SARS\, and the Spanish Flu\, the leading cause of death in many U.S. cities was tuberculosis. Reaching epidemic proportions in the early 20th Century\, the need to treat tuberculosis coincided with public health awareness of tuberculosis as a communicable disease that required both improvements in housing and adequate isolation of the sick. This ultimately led to the founding of private and state-operated hospitals known as sanatoriums.  \nTypically located in rural settings\, mountains\, or seaside locations\, sanatoriums provided comfort and isolation where patients could breathe fresh air\, rest\, and have controlled access to sunlight – the very features that supposedly contributed to the cure for tuberculosis. Architectural innovations in sanatoriums such as fresh air porches\, gardens creating a homelike setting\, and majestic grounds for respiratory and cardiovascular stimulation\, are still in use in America’s hospital designs today. But the reliance on them would end after WWII when microbiologist Selman Waksman discovered the antibiotic streptomycin. While most sanatoriums have been demolished or repurposed into modern facilities\, the historical significance of the existing structures still show as symbols of progressive ideas and civic responsibility that were constructed by the like minds of physicians\, philanthropists\, and government officials.  \nBio:\nJohn Lazzaro is a photographer and documentary filmmaker based in Long Island\, NY. Fascinated by history and storytelling\, his documentaries address topics of social awareness. Hindsight (2010)\, offered a painful look at Long Island’s heroin epidemic. His first photo book\, The Walls Still Talk documents the decades of neglect and decay of the Kings Park Psychiatric Center in Kings Park\, NY as a result of deinstitutionalization.  \nIn his approach to photography\, Lazzaro draws upon his experiences from documentary filmmaking in order to create a realistic\, visual\, and thought-provoking dialogue of the macabre. His main focus is capturing abandoned buildings and vanishing architecture throughout the United States. Lazzaro is also a member of fotofoto gallery in Huntington\, NY and The Firefly Gallery in Northport\, NY.

SUMMARY:Ennid Berger: Abundance
DESCRIPTION:Artist Statement:\nI am grateful for the abundance in my life that allows me\, in these difficult times\, to continue to work as a photo artist sending my imagery into our world. These pears are a metaphor for the richness of life; they retain a unique visual energy; they have an attractive anthropomorphic shape that is symbolic of gratitude and good fortune. And finally\, pears serve well as the simple basis of my experiments with form and light in an undefined space.  \nRepetition and Variation:\nI have been working to create these multiply processed prints since 2006\, when I began using beautiful pears as a motif for visual explorations\, refining and reprinting this imagery until this year’s “harvest” of prints in 2021. Each image began as a traditionally printed photogram – a cameraless contact print conceived and printed in a wet darkroom. Next\, I painted some images with oil paints to enhance the composition. I digitally photographed each completed analog print and refined and edited each image before printing it on exhibition quality paper. As sculptor Henry Moore said\, there is great pleasure in translating your work to another state. Changing my original analog work into larger digitally based prints has been challenging and exciting.   \nBIO:\nEnnid Berger works on Long Island and in Key West and has been described as a “distinguished Long Island artist” (Newsday\, 8/30/13). She uses her own photographic prints as her primary art medium\, exploring the art forms of digital and traditional darkroom printing. She is fascinated by the spatial interplay of form and light.  \nEnnid has exhibited extensively in solo and group shows across Long Island\, including the Heckscher Museum of Art\, the Parrish Art Museum and the Islip Museum of Art. She has been selected to exhibit in three Long Island Biennials. Ennid studied photography at the International Center of Photography and studied painting with renowned artists Robert Yasuda\, Paul Pagk\, Betty Holliday and Stan Brodsky. DESCRIPTION:ARTIST STATEMENT – \nI was always drawn to cities\, and the variety of architecture on display. Side streets in the Village at night with their chunky old buildings and thin filigreed iron rails surrounding them\, played a significant part of my college years. Alone or with friends\, cameras and film dangling from pockets\, from street to street\, I saw history on every corner. It was a panoply of structural delight. I found beauty in the sometimes jagged\, sometimes flowing lines of the street furniture\, the lamp posts\, and the sculptured facades that graced the edifices of the past. All architecture to me. All something I needed to record with my lens. \nI’ve culled from years of travel\, several images that represent my fascination with architecture: from the distinctive San Francisco bay windows of an apartment complex\, to the row of metal slatted delivery doors on the commercial area of Red Hook\, Brooklyn; the crisp lines of a warehouse across from oil tanks in Bridgeport Connecticut; graffiti on an ancient building in NYC’s Soho. \nI hope my images offer a new approach to the word Architecture. And that one can see not just the hard cement surfaces\, but also the rhythm\, sensuosity\, and spirit that each individual design imbues.  \nArtist’s BIO\n \nAronda Xystris has been an Artist/Photographer for almost 60 years. Creating for her has always been about seeing beyond the obvious image to find a unique way of expressing it. She has photographed everything from architecture\, to landscape\, to the unexpected in street photography. Her influences in this genre include Vivian Maier\, Mary Ellen Mark\, and Berenice Abbott.  \nDuring her many summers in Provincetown\, MA\, she was exposed not only to the vast\, seductive landscape of the Cape\, often referred to  “Cape Cod Light\,” but to the inspiration of photographers\, artists\, and writers who lived there. Spending one summer taking classes with photographer Joel Meyerowitz\, was a huge influence on what she saw and how she continues to see the land and sea.  \nAronda graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn\, NY\, with a Bachelor of Fine Art\, and furthered her art and photography education at C.W. Post\, School of Visual Arts\, NYIT\, Truro Center for the Arts in Cape Cod\, and Women’s Studio Workshop\, Rosendale\, NY. She has been a member of Mills Pond Gallery in St. James\, and Stepping Stone Gallery in Huntington\, where she has lived since1994. Her photographs have been exhibited in galleries in Queens\, NY\, Babylon\, NY\, Lincoln Center\, NY\, and in studio settings in Fire Island\, NY\, where she exhibits her photographs and paintings at the Artist Tour of Cherry Grove every spring. Her work has been featured in Newsday\, New York Times\, and Fire Island News. She currently exhibits her work at   fotofoto gallery in Huntington\, NY\, where she is a member.

SUMMARY:Alan M Richards - The Art of Being Human
DESCRIPTION:ARTIST BIO/STATEMENT – \nMy work may be classified as photo-based  image composites or new media art. The images may be playful\,  satirical\, or of a more serious nature.   I try to tell a story with each image. My artwork represents the human condition. It reflects how I view events and the interaction between people and the world.  \n My work is primarily based on photographic images. I either take the images myself or I use found/vintage or other  images combined with my images. The images are almost always supplemented by digital painting and drawing\,  image clips\, vectors\, and CAD elements.  I enjoy the work of Edward Hopper\, Rene Magritte\, and David Hockney\, and  see my work falling somewhere between all three artists. \nI do not have a set pattern about how an image grows. I guess it is organic in that elements of the final image change over the time I’m working on the picture. Sometimes\, an entire background will change or elements will be added or deleted. The end goal is to create an image with visual interest. I may start out with some notion of the potential look of the final piece\, but that often changes as the piece progresses. \nAppreciation of art and design has always been a part of my life since both of my parents were artists. My father\, a commercial artist\, was influential in introducing me to advertising art and graphic design. My mother was an accomplished oil painter who studied at The Art Student’s League.  Although I always had an interest in artwork\, I chose a different path. By profession\, I became an Audiologist. I earned a Ph.D. from the City University of New York (CUNY) in Hearing Science and was a Professor of Audiology at CUNY for nearly 30 years. I also practiced privately over those years with the practice located  in the Upper East Side of Manhattan.  Although I produced artwork sporadically over my work career\, it is only within the last decade that the passion for making art blossomed.

SUMMARY:Andrea Fortunoff - Wasted
DESCRIPTION:ARTIST STATEMENT – ‘Wasted’ is a series of photographs picturing the afterlife of abandoned objects in and around Washington County\, Maine. These images catalog the decay of abandoned machinery and other designed objects; focusing on the things we thoughtlessly throw away\, from cheap objects designed to break\, to tools and machines made by highly skilled labor. They serve as evidence of waste of not just our planetary resources\, but a waste of human resources. ‘Wasted” uses the power of photography to look at the designed world in a new way; wherein automation and the tools used to increase efficiency and productivity are not benign. The relics in this series serve as a portal into the history of labor and the unintended consequences of designing an economy whose primary focus is to minimize human input into manufacturing. Ultimately this series asks us to consider an object’s life from design to creation\, to use and finally to abandonment. \nArtist’s BIOAndrea Fortunoff is a native New Yorker\, an architect\, photographer and dancer. Since she was given her first camera at 12 she developed a passion for photography. After graduating from Tulane University with a B.A. in Systems Theory\, Andrea worked in the New Orleans area as a computer systems analyst. Returning to New York and school\, Andrea graduated from Pratt Institute with a B.A. in Architecture and worked in the tri-state area as a registered architect for 30 years. Andrea’s recent studies at the International Center for Photography in NYC and with John Paul Caponigro  and Stella Johnson have helped to hone her artistic vision of the natural and constructed environment. Andrea is currently an exhibiting member of fotofoto Gallery and B.J. Spoke Gallery in Huntington\, N.Y.

DESCRIPTION:ARTIST STATEMENT – DISTANT is a short photographic project inspired by the isolation I experienced during the height of the Covid pandemic. As a street photographer\, I always look to capture moments where the formal elements are arranged to create a visual interest\, but my approach was different than usual. Instead of being close to my subjects\, I needed to use an extremely distant vantage point to create images that would share with the viewer the reality of my experience and convey the feeling of isolation that being detached creates. \nDuring the Spring and early Summer of 2020\, when most places were still closed\, and people basically remained quarantined from each other\, I began to take walks along the beach and found others doing the same. People were understandably very avoidant and kept their distance\, reinforcing my feelings of isolation and loneliness experienced since the beginning of the lock down. \nArtist’s BIO

DESCRIPTION:Pamela Waldroup – PORTRAITS: Interconnected\nArtists Exhibition Dates: July 1 – July 24\, 2021\nArtists’ Reception: Saturday\, July  10th from 4-7 PM  \nBio/Artist Statement:\nPORTRAITS: Interconnected emerged as a series while revisiting images of people\, past and present and intentionally deciding to voice more transparently the importance of the completely unavoidable relationship between artist and subject. How much of a portrait is truly a “self-portrait?”\nEach portrait is not just an image of the person. It is also a visual representation of some part of me\, a narrative about what is in or missing from my life …a glimpse of the passion\, fascinations and fears that I have. The images are not about what the people look like\, they are about power\, elegance\, strength\, familiarity\, grace\, gratitude\, pride in one’s work\, and attention to quirky details that personify\, distinguish and define a moment forever. \nIsolated for months during this past year\, I was not unique in looking at the past and the present under a microscope. I found myself both narrowing my focus and expanding it exponentially as I revisited images\, old and new\, and realized the interconnections I had with these friends and strangers … and subsequently\, an awareness of the ability on my part to present my strengths and vulnerabilities through their portraits. \nThe portraits that I have chosen to exhibit span 20 years and speak to the significance of many of my life experiences at a given moment in time. Discovering which portraits spoke loudly to me was a solitary process validated through much personal reflection and writing. The close proximity of the subject\, the cropped compositions\, the formality or lack of it and the softness or harshness of the light were captured and heavily edited to reflect my interconnections with the people in front of me while bringing their powerful personalities to life. \nI know myself better as a result of shooting these images\, spending hours editing and re-editing to get the just the right emotional punch in a digital image\, and then editing again to convey the same passion in an archival print.\n“This looks nothing like me\, but I know myself better now.” (Kiki Farish\, Professor\, Meredith College\, North Carolina\,)

Inspiration truly took hold\, and I felt just like a wide-eyed child running around with a camera in a world of “Pure Imagination.” \n“Growing old is mandatory. Growing up is optional.” –  Carroll Bryant \nAs children\, we rely on our imagination to take us to make-believe places\, to meet people we never really met and experience things beyond our young understanding of the world around us. We project stories onto the objects we hold most sacred as children…our toys. We name them\, take them on adventures and introduce them as if they are as real as we are. We live through them. Their world is pure.We grow older\, and our world changes. Priorities shift\, and we lose part of that imaginative innocence that once came so easily. It can become locked away along with our inner child\, but it can never truly be stamped out. \nI invite you all to make some new friends\, give them names\, make up stories\, and become a child again.

DESCRIPTION:Tom D’Emic – Overlooked \nArtists Exhibition Dates: June 3 – June 26\, 2021Artists’ Reception: Sunday\, June 13th from 1-5PM  \nBio/Artist StatementI was born and raised in Brooklyn\, NY. Growing up\, I spent my summers in Greenport\, NY. It was there that I started connecting to the natural world. Later in life\, this connection explains the direction my photography has taken. When I finished school\, I taught science to children in grades pre-k to grade five in Brooklyn NY for the next thirty-eight years. Upon retiring\, I finally decided to do something I always wanted to do. I started making photographs.For the past nine years\, I have been honing my photographic skills. I consider myself primarily a Long Island based landscape photographer who explores other subject matter as well\, including deconstructed architecture\, shipyard artifacts and animals in context.I want my photography to be a work in progress. I embrace the fact that my work is still evolving. \nThe eight images presented in “Overlooked” represent trees that I passed by many times but not really noticed. An important part of my workflow as a photographer includes visiting the same location over and over and over and over\, again. Each time I return\, I notice a new and interesting aspect of the place. My vision is affected by the light\, the weather or just how I am feeling at that moment in time. What I wish to convey to the viewer determines whether or not I create my images in black and white or color.It is my hope that you enjoy these images as much as I enjoyed creating them.

Gordon – Spherical Magic\nArtists Exhibition Dates: June 3 – June 26\, 2021Artists’ Reception: Sunday\, June 13th from 1-5PM  \nArtist StatementI wish to welcome you to my first post pandemic exhibit\, “Spherical Magic\,” where color\, shape\, reflection and illusionary form merge into a cascade of splendor. The pandemic closed my world immensely…and then a collection of spherical pieces of glass opened up a universe of possibility and wonder. I thought I was going to revisit my marble series from the past for this exhibit. However\, due to some educational speed bumps I decided to shoot a different marble series. After this decision\, I went to gallery sit at fotofoto Gallery\, and walking towards the door\, amazingly\, I found one blue/green magnificent marble in a crevasse in the cement. \n																										 \nMy idea to shoot a new marble series was absolutely confirmed. I had a vision of where to purchase some new marbles\, and as fate would have it\, I found them hanging on a rack exactly where I envisioned them. Like a child in a candy store\, the thrill of shooting the new series was a delight beyond measure – with a racing heartbeat as fuel. Every evening as I set the stage for my shoot\, these marvelous marbles would become animated. Their animation illuminated my life and breathed air into my lungs with color\, shape and magnetic radiance. A visual and heartfelt ballet. A sensory delight. These simply incredible spherical wonders would create\, for me\, a photographer’s Mardi Gras! Truly the antithesis of the past year synthesizing the reality of Covid. I invite you to dance with the messages conveyed within this series. What lies and is created from within always outshines what lies on the surface. The surface provides a suitcase\, so to speak\, with which we are all challenged to pack with the most vibrant color\, sensation and emotion. These magical universes renewed a sense of wonder that had been deeply lost over the past year. Marbles are incredible messengers of light\, form and reflection. Their uniqueness and ever-changing patterns wink for attention while locked in their spherical homes. They seem to mirror humanity.     \nMy vision is that “Spherical Magic” will be a bridge that will connect you to the ever-present Magic of Life. \nAndrea M.
