Holcomb builds rich and complex images of Long Island grown pears. The artist describes her pears as “exhibiting a gestural sensuality that is almost human.”  Her images allow these simple fruits to exude sadness\, love\, timidity\, even rejection. Kristin Holcomb’s pears creep out of the darkness to reveal themselves. The images are no longer still lives but portraits. \nRemember the late ’60’s and early ’70’s. When reality was “cool”and “groovy.” SETH KALMOWITZ‘s images are an attempt to recapture the visual stimulation provided by “better living through chemistry”. When none of her attempts to accomplish this worked out\, she decided instead to place them in beautiful rooms from Interior Design magazines. And thus came the first series of appropriated art\, “Borrowed Space.” As she continued working in that manner\, her photographs developed into a something different than  expected\, and eventually it didn’t seem to matter if the images she used were even hers. By combining found images as well as originals into unlikely settings\, so came the second series “inappropriate appropriation”. \nDuring an eight-month period\, Thom O’Connor roamed east and west on Manhattan’s 14th Street\, photography from the East River to the Hudson River. This artist bears witness to urban humanity struggling to avoid eye contact and striving to remain autonomous within a densely populated and unnaturally constricted space. The imagery is inherently grainy and strikingly high-contrast\, and the complexity of this theme begs the use of the black and white medium. \nAll of the images for this exhibit are printed on aluminum plates. In each photograph\, where the artist excludes imagery\, crafting white space\, the space is replaced and reality subtly altered through the introduction of an inorganic material. Through this medium\, a biomechanical energy is imbued thus enhancing the artist’s vision of a consciously disconnected\, present-day dystopia. \n  \nIn A Split \nInstallation by Michelle Carollo \nIn this exhibition\, Carollo presents In A Split\, a work which functions as both installation and wall hanging\, with numerous elements of aluminum\, plastic\, metal and wood protruding out into the gallery space.  The piece primarily abstract in vein\, is meant to highlight questions of boundaries both literal and figurative asking viewers to navigate contours of the edge. \n  \n  \nApril 6\, 2013 is the kickoff event for SPARKBOOM held at the fotofoto gallery.  fotofoto gallery is one of twelve partners committed to highlighting the high level of innovative artistic and cultural resources surrounding the Huntington hub.
